Meet Sydney Cornett! Georgetown Native and Future Bus Lifer.

Hello! My name is Sydney and I am 25 years old and have lived in Georgetown for the majority of my life. I graduated college in 2018 with a bachelors in Recreation and Park Administration. After college, my boyfriend, Trey, and I decided to go on an adventure so we moved out to Oregon! After a little less than a year of working in the medical marijuana industry, we decided to move back to good ole Georgetown. In the winter of 2019 Trey and I were in the process of opening our own industrial hemp processing company. Right as we were about to open, Covid-19 happened. Our company was put on hold and eventually died. So, we took the money we had, and decided to buy an old school bus to convert into an RV! We have spent the past year working on our bus and are hoping to have it done this fall to finally go traveling around the USA and officially live the “bus life”.

Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
Although I am currently unemployed, my passion is event planning. In the past, I have had several internships and volunteer jobs working for various musical festivals, event companies, catering company’s, etc. I even use my free time to throw parties for my friends. The thing I love most about throwing events is just bringing people together. Giving people something to look forward to after a long work week is what truly makes me happy. My hope is once our bus is done, to travel around the United States to help put on music festivals and community events!

What advice would you give to people who want to work in your field?
For those who are interested in planning events, I highly recommend volunteering for every event you can! Large events NEED volunteers, so not only will you be helping the event succeed, you will be gaining quality experience to put on your resume. Now, my advice for those who are interested in converting a school bus, DO IT!! Although this has been the most physically and emotionally challenging thing I have ever done, it is totally worth it. Knowing that one day when it’s all done, I can say “yeah, I built that” will be one of the biggest accomplishments in my life.

What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I have hiked 80 miles of the Camino Santiago in Spain!

If you could travel anywhere in Kentucky where would it be and why?
If I could travel anywhere in Kentucky, it would be the Red River Gorge. It is absolutely beautiful and has great hikes. Miguel’s pizza is always a plus too!

What is something on your bucket list?
Something on my bucket list is to travel to every state (except Hawaii) on my school bus!

What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
My favorite thing about our community is how quickly it is growing! Just in the past 5 years, so many new restaurants, bars, and small businesses have opened. It truly makes me so happy to see my hometown grow.

What are a couple of your favorite restaurants and shops in our community?
My favorite restaurants in Georgetown are Rodney’s and Local Feed. The food and ambiance at both restaurants are amazing and I love being able to get a delicious meal without having to drive to Lexington.

Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
Honestly, Chuck Tackett. When Trey and I were in the process of starting our own Hemp Processing company, Chuck was one of the hemp farmers who gave us advice about getting into the Hemp industry as well as be a partner with us and supplying the hemp plants for us to process. Chuck is not only a very impressive man, but he is also overall very knowledgeable and a great human being.

Who or what inspires you to be better?
What inspires me to be better is knowing that one day I won’t be on this earth anymore and I don’t want to look back on my life regretting not taking risks and just having fun. I will work the rest of my life, so why NOT live on a school bus in my 20’s?! Ha!

Everyone has a reason they get up every day, what or who is your why?
Over the past couple of years, I have really learned the importance of self-love. Taking care of yourself, loving yourself, challenging yourself, and bettering yourself. So honestly, the reason why I get up every morning is myself!

What 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Safe, family, love
